Fishing Forecast: August
 

August keeps its rhythm here: warm water, early mornings, late evenings, and fish holding tight to bait, passes, and deeper harbor structure through the heat of the day. Here's what visiting anglers can expect and where local captains are putting their time this month.

The Gulf

Nearshore Gulf water runs around 85 degrees this time of year, which means the bite concentrates at sunrise and in the last couple of hours before dark. That warmth also keeps baitfish active and spread out, so Spanish mackerel are your most reliable target, schooling around bars and bait pods outside Boca Grande Pass and along nearshore structure. Live shrimp and shiners are the go-to bait for most captains, though some switch to cigar minnows or blue runners when running farther out for bigger fish.

Two species are off the table this month: Gulf Gag grouper and Gulf greater Amberjack are both closed to harvest through August 31, reopening September 1. Charter trips are better geared toward mackerel and other open-season targets for now.
 

Charlotte Harbor

Charlotte Harbor stays more versatile through most of the year, but August heat pushes fish into deeper water, channel edges, bridge holes, river mouths, and shaded shoreline structure.

Tarpon remain the headline target, and snook are still active and fun to fight, but they're catch-and-release only this month. Captains lean on live pilchards, threadfin herring, shrimp, pinfish, and mullet, sometimes running a chum slick to gather fish before freelining bait through it.

On the regulations side: snook harvest is closed in the Charlotte Harbor region in August, with the season reopening October 1 through November 30 and again March 1 through April 30—a one-fish daily bag limit and a 28- to 33-inch slot apply once it's back open.

For now, plan your trip around mackerel in the Gulf and tarpon-and-release snook fishing in the harbor, and let the early and late light windows do the heavy lifting.
