October in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach means cooler evenings and a full events calendar with just enough spooky stuff to keep things interesting. This month you’ll find exciting offshore power boat racing at the beach, fun cultural events and fascinating local history, and a variety of Halloween celebrations. Day 1: High-Speed Thrills at Englewood Beach Waterfest

For easy access to this month’s main event, Englewood Beach Waterfest, choose a hotel or vacation rental in Englewood. Paradise Breeze Vacation Rentals specializes in homes right on Manasota Key, so you may end up within walking distance, both to the beach and to great beach restaurants. To get a front-row seat for the races, book a stay at Manasota Key Resort, which is right on the water. If you’re also looking for activities a bit removed from the sand and/or dining adventures at a few of the featured Flavor Coast restaurants nearby, Farlow’s on the Water and the Sun Coast Inn is a nice middle ground.

Event Highlight: Waterfest Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) World Championship Boat Races

The APBA Offshore National Championship finale at Englewood Beach features a Pre-Race Party October 8, a Community Block Party October 9, then the boat races Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11. You’ll find refreshments at the food and drink cantina, edu-tainment at the Family Conservation Center, and unbelievable excitement as you watch these boats hit speeds of up to 150 miles an hour!

Day 2: Culture & Haunting History

Spend a leisurely morning enjoying a tasty Greek breakfast at Toula’s or an indulgent Benedict at Elena’s Restaurant. Then, either spend some time on the water with a rental from Your Boat Club, or explore until it’s time for an afternoon festival and/or an evening walking tour.

Event Highlights: October Events

Haunts & History Tour: discover the mysterious side of Punta Gorda on most Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights through the end of the year. This 1.5-to-2 hour guided walking tour explores the haunted history of Punta Gorda from its founding to today. Reservations are required.

Fishermen’s Village is offering two cultural fests this month:

German American Oktoberfest, October 3, noon–9 pm: enjoy traditional German food, authentic beers on tap, live music, and festive dancing along the waterfront. See what else is happening in our Oktoberfest blog post.
International Culture Fest, October 10, noon–6 pm: this festival features global music, traditional performances, food, and hand-crafted artisan goods.

Day 3: Peak Spooky and Animal Experiences

Work up an appetite at Babcock/Webb Wildlife Management Area with hiking, biking, fishing, nature photography, or scenic driving. For lunch, head to Peace River Seafood for fresh seafood or indulge in authentic Indian food at Curry and Kabab in Port Charlotte.

Tie a bow on the day with a spooky experience. Try one, the other, or both:

Babcock Ranch Halloween Nights (Thursday–Sunday, Oct. 2–31): featuring a walk-through haunted house, themed photo ops, the Lantern Lounge, and a Family Fun Zone. Sensory-friendly nights are Monday, October 12 and Monday, October 26, and Trick-or-Treat nights are October 23 and 24.
Halloween Notte (Friday–Sunday, Oct 16–31): the Charlotte County Fairgrounds in Port Charlotte come alive for this annual tradition offering haunted houses, carnival rides, fall festival treats, and more.
