In 2020, Punta Gorda was named to the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards list for Best Small Town Food Scene, coming in 2nd place—the only Florida destination on the list that year. In 2021, we were a runner-up in the voting to make the list. It was a genuine surprise both years, but looking back, it makes sense: our culinary scene has only grown since, with more restaurants, more creativity, and more reasons to eat your way through downtown:

Carmelo’s Italian Ristorante

Carmelo's has earned a steady stream of accolades over the years, including OpenTable's 100 Best Al Fresco Restaurants in America, and currently holds a 4.9-star rating across thousands of reviews.

With a beautiful outdoor seating area and live music events, they've become a destination in the area, not just for dining. The ambiance is lovely, outdone only by the delectable menu.

Try the Bada Bing Pasta. Trust.

The Perfect Caper

Did you know that Punta Gorda has its own celebrity chef? Chef Jeanie Roland is a seven-time James Beard Foundation nominee for Best Chef: South, and she actually beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network's Beat Bobby Flay, and competed on Iron Chef Gauntlet.

Her Punta Gorda restaurant, The Perfect Caper, is also a nine-time Florida Trend "Golden Spoon Award" winner, Florida's top culinary nod.

The Celtic Ray Public House

Dining Area of the Celtic Ray Public HouseThe Celtic Ray has earned a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice award, putting it in the top 10% of restaurants reviewed on the platform, and the food, beer, and atmosphere all live up to it.

With a roomy beer garden and outdoor stage, the Ray is the perfect place to spend an evening with friends. Entertainment includes live music from local and nationally-known bands, trivia nights, and more. The Fish and Chips can't be beat, and of course, this is the place to be on Saint Patrick's Day

Italia at River City Grill

Most of Italia's produce comes from local growers, reflecting a commitment to quality, organic living, and environmentally friendly farming. They also use fresh clams harvested from local waters, the finest Italian cheeses available, and only fresh mussels, fish, and chicken. Italia even raises its own Red Angus cattle at a nearby ranch, and it's clear they know what they're doing food-wise.

F.M. Don’s

The dining room of F.M. Don's is a lovely space where you can see the history of Punta Gorda on the walls. Chef/Owner Keith Meyer uses French techniques and keeps his menu fresh, seasonal, and approachable. You'll sometimes see him in the dining room, sharing cooking techniques and checking in with diners.

Definitely worth a special trip.

The IceHouse PubFour friends toasting at IceHouse Pub in Punta Gorda, Florida

Housed in a building from the 1890s that was originally the city's ice plant, the Pub offers 26 taps of the best beers from around the world (like Guinness, Boddington's, and Stella Artois), British-style pub entertainment including competition-style dart boards, and a full British-themed menu of staples like Fish 'n Chips, Cottage Pie, and Bangers & Mash (plus American favorites like cheeseburgers, steak sandwiches, and giant salads). The IceHouse Pub is a destination in itself.

Peace River Seafood & Botanicals

This community gem draws locals, seasonal residents, and visitors alike. If you love seafood, Peace River Seafood & Botanicals is the place to go.

Bonus: their fresh market also carries CBD products from Peace River Botanicals, along with the seafood. Word of advice: don't miss the blue crabs!
