Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach moves at its own pace. Days start early on the water, slow down as the sun goes down, then end with live music and something good to eat. Many visitors find their way to the big harborside spots, but locals know plenty of smaller places that will make you feel right at home.
If you’re looking for local things to do this weekend, we’ve got you covered. Here are favorites from a road less traveled:
1. Start the Day with Coffee by the Water
Here in Punta Gorda, mornings are unhurried. Begin with coffee and a view at Punta Gorda Coffee & Tea. Known for its fresh-roasted beans and friendly, small-town feel, it’s just a few steps from the path that connects with Harborwalk, making it an easy stop before a bike ride or walk.
Insider tip: Grab your drink to go and walk toward the waterfront before the sun gets too high; the light over the harbor is hard to beat.
2. Borrow a Free Bike and See the Sights
Punta Gorda’s free bike loaner program is the best way to explore the area. All you need is a state-issued ID and a credit card (they make copies and destroy them once the bikes are returned). You can borrow from the Four Points by Sheraton, the SpringHill Suites, the Military Heritage Museum, or Fresco Punta Gorda. We recommend a scenic ride around town to see how many of the 30+ historical murals you can find.
Insider tip: Gilchrist Park is a favorite for water views.
3. Explore Nature on the Water
Saltwater Dreaming Charters offers small-group tours showcasing the quiet beauty of Charlotte Harbor and nearby barrier islands, while Wilderness Boat Tours specializes in exploring the Peace River. Whichever tour you choose, you'll see a lot of wildlife, from fish, rays, and dolphins in the water to birds of all types, and alligators and maybe an otter or two on a river bank.
Insider tip: Start your day at John Ski's House of Breakfast and Lunch. They open at 6 am every day so you can head out as early (or as late) as you like.

4. Stop by a Gallery
Sea Grape Artists Gallery, a cooperative space run by over 20 resident artists, and the Artisan Atelier, are both in downtown Punta Gorda and both offer the opportunity to speak to an artist. At Sea Grape, the person greeting you likely created one of the pieces on display and at the Atelier, each artist has their own space where you can watch them create, speak to them, and even purchase select works.
Insider tip: Ask questions! Hearing the artists speak about their work is part of what makes these places feel so special.
5. Spend Saturday Morning at the Farmers Market
Saturday mornings belong to the Punta Gorda Downtown Farmers’ Market. Find fresh seafood, homemade pasta, citrus and produce, plants, art, and so much more, along with plenty of conversation and live music.
Insider tip: Get there before 10 am if you want the best baked goods, they disappear fast!
6. Catch Some Live Music
When the day winds down, the music turns up. Celtic Ray Public House is an institution at this point, with authentic food, Guinness from the source, and rousing live music most nights. A few blocks away, Ortigia Cucina & Bar offers a lower-key musical experience that pairs well with their chef-inspired menu.
Insider tip: Many venues post their band lineups on social media, so take a look when you're out and about.
7. Explore Laishley Park
When Punta Gorda throws a festival, it’s often at Laishley Park, whether it's a full-blown event like the upcoming Fourth Fest or a craft or food festival.
The path is right along the water, so it's perfect for walking around, eating something fried, and enjoying whoever’s on stage.
Insider tip: Event or no, the marina is great for boat-watching, Harbor Scoops is just the spot for hand-crafted waterfront ice cream, and the balcony at Laishley Crab House offers nice sunset views.
Local life here is laid back, sociable, and full of small discoveries. It's no wonder that people who visit Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach once tend to find their way back again and again.
