Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach moves at its own pace. Days start early on the water, slow down as the sun goes down, then end with live music and something good to eat. Many visitors find their way to the big harborside spots, but locals know plenty of smaller places that will make you feel right at home.

If you’re looking for local things to do this weekend, we’ve got you covered. Here are favorites from a road less traveled:

1. Start the Day with Coffee by the Water

Punta Gorda Coffee & TeaHere in Punta Gorda, mornings are unhurried. Begin with coffee and a view at Punta Gorda Coffee and Tea. Known for its fresh-roasted beans and friendly, small-town feel, it’s just a few steps from the path that connects with Harborwalk, making it an easy stop before a bike ride or walk.

Insider note: Grab your drink to go and walk toward the waterfront before the sun gets too high; the light over the harbor is hard to beat.

2. Borrow a Free Bike and See the Harbor

Punta Gorda’s free bike-loan program is the best way to explore the area. All you need is a state-issued ID to explore at your own pace on a free yellow bike. Borrow one from the Four Points by Sheraton, the SpringHill Suites, the Military Heritage Museum, and Fresco Punta Gorda and take a scenic ride along the Harborwalk, a wide path lined with public art, small parks and plenty of shade.

Insider note: Stop at Gilchrist Park for a short break. It’s where locals go to enjoy the views and catch the first hint of a sunset.

3. Kayak Through the Mangroves at Bill Coy Preserve

If you’re feeling more outward bound, the Dr. Willard “Bill” Coy Preserve in Englewood is the place to be. Locals paddle through its mangrove tunnels for a bit of quiet, as the only sounds come from the birds and the ripples of water. SUP Englewood rents kayaks nearby, and can point you toward calm routes where you might spot a manatee or two.

Insider note: Go early. The light through the mangroves is best in the morning, and the water stays glassy until the breeze picks up.

4. Drop by Sea Grape Artists Gallery

Sea Grape Artist Gallery in Punta Gorda, FloridaDowntown’s Sea Grape Artists Gallery has been part of the community for more than 35 years. It’s a cooperative space run by over 20 resident artists, so the person greeting you likely created one of the pieces on display. The gallery boasts an amazing selection of paintings in all media along with pottery, jewelry, and more, in the heart of downtown Punta Gorda.

Insider note: Ask questions! The artists love to talk about their work and it's part of what makes the place feel so personal.

5. Spend Saturday Morning at the Farmers Market

Saturday mornings belong to the Punta Gorda Downtown Farmers’ Market. Named one of the best small markets in the state, it’s the kind of weekly outing that many make time for. There’s fresh seafood, homemade pasta, citrus and produce, plants, art, and so much more, along with plenty of conversation and live music.

Insider note: Get there before 10 am if you want the best baked goods, as they can disappear fast!

6. Catch Some Live Music Downtown

When the day winds down, the music turns up. Celtic Ray Public House is an institution at this point, with authentic food, Guinness from the source, and rousing live music most nights. A few blocks away, Ortigia Cucina & Bar offers a lower-key musical experience that pairs well with their chef-inspired menu.

Insider note: Many venues post their band lineups on social media, so take a look when you're out and about.

7. Join the Festivities at Laishley Park

Taste of Punta Gorda Attendees Enjoying Live MusicWhen Punta Gorda throws a festival, it’s often at Laishley Park. The Punta Gorda Seafood & Music Festival and the Chili, Beer, and Music Festival, pull great crowds each January, as do the March events, Taste of Punta Gorda and Beyond and the Smoke on the River BBQ and Music Festival. And it's always a good idea to keep an eye on this location come July 4.

The park’s open harborfront is perfect for walking around, eating something fried, and enjoying whoever’s on stage.

Insider note: Even without an event, Laishley Park is one of the best sunset spots in town. Grab takeout or some ice cream just steps away, and enjoy the view.

Local life here is laid back, sociable, and full of small discoveries. It's no wonder that people who visit Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach once tend to find their way back again and again.
