Read the complete Allegiant announcement... Each year, Allegiant hosts an annual Airports Conference. The event is an opportunity for leadership from each of the airports they serve to come to Las Vegas for updates about their company as well as one-on-one meetings reviewing the performance of each individual market. During Allegiant presentations, they highlight the value brought to the communities they serve by making travel more affordable, which inevitably results in more people traveling more often. This can only be sustained with a relentless attention to minimizing our operating costs. When airports work with Allegiant to minimize expenses, they're able to offer lower fares to their community and stimulate more passengers through their airport and onto their aircraft. The Low Cost Destination Airport Award is given to the destination airport within the Allegiant network with the lowest operating cost – from direct airport fees to fuel to ground handling. The destination airports are distinguished as categorically different then their origination airports because they often operate in larger metropolitan markets with a higher volume of competing air service. By lowering operating costs, Punta Gorda Airport has recently attracted additional Allegiant air service and helped to make that service affordable for the community. As a part of the event, five specific airports were recognized for going 'above and beyond' in their efforts to support our service in the following categories: Low Cost Airport, Low Cost Destination Airport, Best Marketing, Outstanding Partner, Air Service Development. Allegiant recently announced the establishment of a new base of operations at Punta Gorda Airport (PGD) as of June 27, 2012.  The company will open the base with one 150 seat, MD-80 series jet aircraft at the airport and create local jobs for flight attendants and airport service personnel. In conjunction with the base, Allegiant will begin new, nonstop air service to Southwest Florida from four markets : Fort Wayne, IN; Niagara Falls/Buffalo, NY; Peoria, IL; and South Bend, IN. Existing nonstop air service to and from PGD is to Greenville/Spartanburg, SC; Knoxville, TN; and Lexington, KY.
