Sculptures Alight Punta Gorda Sanctuary for Global Once-A-Year Show, Feb 4-Apr 18

Punta Gorda, Fla. (Jan 25, 2022) – Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens announces the arrival of ZimSculpt, an exclusive exhibit of modern Zimbabwean stone sculptures from Feb 4 through Apr 18, 2022. More than 100 African sculptures will be on display across the 30-acre sanctuary and gardens, and all will be available for purchase. The exhibit will also include a Zimbabwean marketplace where hundreds of unique carvings, traditional baskets, and jewelry will be available at retail.

ZimSculpt only travels from Africa to North America once a year for display in a preselected Garden. In 2022, this prestigious honor has been bestowed on the Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens in Punta Gorda. Peace River also welcomes Zimbabwean sculptors Passmore Mupindiko and Brighton Layson, who will demonstrate their masterful artistry on select days throughout the show.

The exhibit’s sculptures are known for their striking style that is unique to the Shona tribe of southern Africa. Hailed by Newsweek as “…perhaps the most important new art form to emerge from Africa in this century,” the Zimbabwean pieces are carved from various types of serpentine and semi-precious stone, often weighing tons, and reaching heights of seven feet tall. The word Zimbabwe means “great stone house”.

ZimSculpt is a curated artist collective of more than 200 hundred Zimbabwean sculptors including world-renowned artists and young apprentices. All ZimSculpt sculptures have been ethically sourced, and artists are fairly compensated for their talent.

During the exhibit, daily activities will surround themes: Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Workshop Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday, Flower Friday, Sculptural Saturday, and Family Funday Sunday. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite or at the gate.

Visit Peace River Gardens for more information on admission and special events.
