CAPE HAZE, Fla. (December 9, 2015) – Palm Island Resort is the setting for a new televised fishing program entitled Charlotte Harbor Chronicles, which begins airing December 28, 2015 on the Sportsman Channel, a cable television network devoted to honoring the outdoor lifestyle and available on all major cable providers.

The 13-week series features daily stories of fishing guides in the Southwest Florida area, hosted by Captain Mike Slattery with Palm Island Outfitters, who books fishing excursions for guests of Palm Island Resort. Each week Capt. Slattery will explore another facet of this amazing fishery and unveil the true beauty of Southwest Florida. The 30-minute show airs on Mondays at 5:00 a.m., repeating on Fridays at 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m.

“It’s a culmination of a grassroots effort that’s actually taken about three years,” said Capt. Slattery. “Charlotte County is one of the most protected and natural environments in the State of Florida. Fishing guides and other businesses that rely on the waterways to make a living show respect for the environment. With these practices in place and support from local government leaders and their conservation efforts, Charlotte Harbor will stay that way and continue to be a leading destination for fishing.”

Among the sponsors of the new television show is Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf Islands, the tourism division of Charlotte County government that promotes the fishing and boating opportunities in the region. Capt. Slattery led the production and is a sponsor along with Palm Island Resort and its restaurants Rum Bay and Leverock’s, Under Water Fishlight and Ingman Marine. National brand sponsors include Maverick Boat Co., YETI Coolers and PowerPole.

Charlotte Harbor is a premier destination for fishing and Charlotte Harbor Chronicles shows off the beauty of the region, showcasing the kinds of water sports people can enjoy year round. Not a “how to” instructive program, Charlotte Harbor Chronicles offers daily stories of the life of a fishing guide.

“People will travel somewhere in the world to go fishing and we have a variety of species right here and all styles of fishing, depending on the time of the year,” said Capt. Slattery. “Charlotte Harbor’s ideal location on Florida’s West Coast offers easy access through Punta Gorda Airport, and international airports in nearby Fort Myers, Sarasota and Tampa. It’s a great place for family travel, with plenty of accommodations, affordability, and an Old Florida feel that appeals to fishermen.”

Host of the program, Capt. Slattery was raised in Charlotte County and has spent his whole life on the water, boating and kayaking when he was a boy. He left for college to study marketing and came home to find that fishing and boating were still a passion for him. While he never thought it would become his career, fishing was an escape, while he worked for his father’s construction company. The downturn in the economy in 2008 found him needing income, especially as a newlywed and the birth of his first son. He had to find a way to make a living and launched Palm Island Outfitters. Specifically, Captain Slattery ascertains what the guests are looking for and accurately matches them up with the fishing guide or boat captain to ensure expectations are met to deliver an enjoyable and memorable vacation experience. The number of repeat clients who ask for the same guide year after year is evidence that it works.
