From October 4 to November 1, Sea Grape Gallery will be featuring two of their artists, Thelma Daida, water media artist, and Marlene Jones, horsehair pottery artist.
Thelma Daida was raised in Hawaii and became a registered nurse specializing in Operating Room nursing. She spent much of her nursing career in the Panama Canal Zone/Republic of Panama. Upon moving to Florida, she decided to pursue her artistic interests which led her to taking many water color classes and workshops. Having a love of bright and vivid colors, Thelma has experimented with fluid acrylics layering over watercolor, which she feels has resulted in creating more interesting, colorful pieces with depth and mystery. As Thelma says, “I have recently been doing abstract realism and non-objective pieces which I find challenging, fun and rewarding”. Her artwork has been accepted in many juried shows where she has received numerous awards.
Marlene Jones first became interested in pottery in the 1960’s while in Baltimore, Maryland. Several years later, she moved to Italy where she became interested in the great masters of ceramic art. When returning to the United States, Marlene spent her time with a career in marketing and public relations. Upon retiring to Punta Gorda in 2004, she knew she needed to reunite with her love of creating pottery. She creates raku glazed pieces but her real love is creating horsehair pottery in a style similar to that of the Plains Indians. After forming the piece on the potter’s wheel and firing it in a gas kiln, she applies horsehair on the glowing hot piece resulting in the hallmark of horsehair pottery. Marlene explains that “my personal passion is taking what some considers mud and turning it into something useful and beautiful”.
Many of Thelma’s bold and colorful paintings and Marlene’s beautiful horsehair pottery are prominently on display at the Sea Grape Gallery. In addition, more of their art and the artworks of all Sea Grape artists can be viewed at seagrapegallery.com.
