Charlotte HarborThe destination has been dealing with red tide the last couple of months and we wanted to share with you where water samples are taken in Charlotte County to determine red tide.

According to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the Florida Fish & Wildlife Research Institute receives two weekly samples from Charlotte County Parks and Recreation from the Boca Grande Pier and Englewood Beach. Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services usually collects samples at least once a month and the increases based on need. When red tide is present, they will most likely receive 4–5 samples a week from Gasparilla Pass, northeast of Sandfly Key, mouth of Catfish Creek, northwest of Bull Key and south of Hog Island.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection provides a monthly sample from the Punta Gorda Boat Ramp. In conjunction with Mote Marine Laboratory, FWC conducts a Coastal Survey in Charlotte County almost monthly at 3 stations located offshore. They also receive “opportunistic samples” from other volunteers, meaning, there is not a set schedule.
