Karenia brevis has been the unwelcome visitor to Southwest Florida this summer and it’s been heartbreaking. We are aware many visitors have cancelled or changed their vacations due to red tide, or have spent their entire time inside their vacation unit because they weren’t aware of other things to do.

Human safety is a priority and we want visitors to have a safe and pleasant experience, which is why we want to remind everyone Charlotte County offers alternatives to the beach.

Some of these activities include a swamp buggy ride with Babcock Ranch Eco Tours, Rick Treworgy’s Muscle Car City, and Punta Gorda’s free bicycle loaner program. Or, catch a Charlotte Stone Crabs game, solve a mystery at an escape room like Escape Port Charlotte or Escape Rooms Unlocked--Punta Gorda, shop at Fishermen’s Village, take a harbor or upriver cruise with King Fisher Fleet, or check out the happenings at Bert’s Black Widow. Kudos to the Red Tide Heroes

Doing the right thing is not always easy and we commend those businesses who have been proactive in informing their guests about current red tide conditions and for being flexible with cancellation policies.  Many visitors save for a year or longer to vacation where we live and they should have a safe and positively memorable experience.
