The public and members of the media are invited to attend the groundbreaking of the PicklePlex of Punta Gorda at Florida SouthWestern State College on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The new facility will feature 32 outdoor courts built to USA Pickleball Association specifications, covered bleachers, concession with covered courtyard and a covered picnic area.

Phase 2 of the project will add a 40,000-sq-ft building that will house eight indoor sanctioned air-conditioned courts; a pro shop with the latest pickleball equipment; restaurant and bar; fitness center; and conference center available for community events.

The PicklePlex of Punta Gorda Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, will provide a positive environment for the residents of Charlotte County and surrounding communities for the health and well-being of the public. The complex will provide outdoor and indoor facilities focusing on exercise and competitive sports including but not limited to Pickleball. Emphasis will be placed on educating youth and the underprivileged on the merits of sports activities and fitness. The state of the art facility will attract participants from out of state and all over the world.

Pickleball is a sport that combines the elements of badminton, ping-pong and tennis and is played on badminton-sized courts with a slightly modified tennis net. It is played with a paddle and plastic ball with holes. The sport is popular throughout the United States and Canada and is growing in many Asian and European countries.*
