What are the 2.4mR sailboats? According to the 2.4mR USA, “the 2.4 meter is perhaps the best, most fun single-handed boat you will ever sail. It can be tactical, technical, and fast as you want it to be. This 2.4m class includes former Americas Cup sailors, one-design champions, disabled sailors, cruising class sailors and people of all ages and genders who love to sail.”
CHYC has a strong history hosting 2.4mR events. It hosted the 2.4mR Pre-Worlds in December 2011 prior to the IFDS World Championships hosted by Charlotte Harbor Regatta, Inc. in January 2012. Following up on that success, CHYC and the 2.4 U.S. Class Association created the 2.4mR CanAm Series which included more than 13 boats competing in multiple races from December 2016 - April 2017. In 2017-2018, last Regatta Series, 22 boats competed. In addition, the 2.4mR Western Hemisphere Championships was held on Charlotte Harbor in February 2018.
The regatta dates are as follows:
Dec 10-11, 2019 CHYC Midwinters CanAm #1
Dec 13-15, 2019 US Nationals CanAm #2
Jan 25-26, 2020 Edge Midwinters CanAm #3
Feb 22-23, 2020 CanAm #4
March 27-29, 2020 CanAm Finale #5
Tony Pocklington is the president of the 2.4mR US Class Association. He has just returned home from two weeks in Genoa, Italy where he participated in the 2.4mR Open World Championship at The Yacht Club Italiano. Tony was the only participant from North America and raced under the American flag and the CHYC burgee. He made us all proud when he placed 20th out of 91 other competitors from around the world.
Come out on the water by 10:30 a.m. each day of the CanAm regattas and tune your VHF radio to channel 72 to listen to the informational discussions between the committee boats. The 2019/2020 2.4mR CanAm Regatta Series promises fun-filled and challenging racing! See former Olympians returning to Charlotte Harbor to mix it up with spirited, smart and competitive racers. In fact, CHYC’s very own Tony Pocklington and one of its newest members, Dee Smith, who represented the U.S. in the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, will be among the racers. In their December races, out of the 20 participating boats, five were sailed by Paralympions from Norway, Canada and the U.S. Internationally recognized sailors in our own backyard…it just doesn’t get any better!
