Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club to Host The 2018 2.4mR Western Hemisphere Championships

PUNTA GORDA/ENGLEWOOD BEACH, Fla. (January 16, 2018) – The Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club is proud to announce that Charlotte Harbor has been selected as the host site for the 2018 2.4mR Western Hemisphere Championship.  The event will take place February 20-23 with registration, vessel launching and social events taking place at the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club (CHYC) located at 4400 Lister Street in Port Charlotte.  In addition, a clinic conducted by 2016 Para-Olympian, Dee Smith will take place on Tuesday, February 20th beginning at 9:15am.

What are the 2.4mR sailboats?   According to the 2.4mR USA, “the 2.4 meter is perhaps the best, most fun single-handed boat you will ever sail.  It can be tactical, technical, and fast as you want it to be. This 2.4m class includes former Americas Cup sailors, one-design champions, disabled sailors, cruising class sailors and people of all ages and genders who love to sail”.

CHYC has a strong history hosting 2.4mR events as they hosted the “Pre-Worlds” for the 2.4mR class in December 2011 leading up to the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships hosted by Charlotte Harbor Regatta, Inc. in January 2012.  Following up on that success, CHYC created the 2.4mr CanAm Service which included over 13 boats competing in multiple races from December 2016-April 2017.  Due to its success, the US Class Association asked CHYC to host the series again and following is the remaining schedule which includes the Western Hemisphere Championships:

Come out on the water on February 21 -23, 2018 and tune your radio to channel 68 and listen to the informational discussions between the Committee Boat, Mark Boats, and Safety Boats.  The Western Hemisphere Championships promises fun filled and challenging racing!  See former Olympian’s mix it up with spirited, smart and competitive racers.  In fact, CHYC’s very own Club Member Tony Pocklington, and one of their newest members Dee Smith, who represented USA in the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, will be among the racers.  In their December races, out of the 20 participating boats, 5 were sailed by Para-Olympian’s from Norway, Canada, and the US.  Internationally recognized sailors in our own backyard…it just doesn’t get any better!
